In an interview with the media, Sauber driver Adrian Sutil believes that this weekend has been disappointing for him and the team in Singapore.
During the race, Sutil once again had to retire his car from the race due to a technical failure when he felt that he was in a good position to score points. His team mate Esteban Guiterrez also had to retire due to suspected recharging problems on his battery on his C33.
In his interview today, Sutil expressed his frustration at retiring once again from a Grand Prix weekend. Sutil stated the following:-
‘It is very frustrating to retire again due to a technical failure. Today we were in a good position to score points. It was a difficult race, as we had problems with the engine at the beginning. However, we were able to fix it and continue with our planned strategy.
Even though Sutil would be disappointed that he has failed to finish a race once again, I feel that scoring points would have been difficult for him, with their rivals looking stronger in the race. But with problems at the start of the race for Sutil, it would seem that he is glad that he was able to continue and race as he had planned.
During the race, Sutil came into contact with Sergio Perez on Lap 31 of the race which then brought out the Safety Car. But Sutil has expressed that there is not much to say about the incident with Perez. Sutil added the following:-
‘Regarding the contact with Sergio (Perez), there is not much to say besides that suddenly he drove into the back of the car. Luckily the car was not damaged.’
I feel that Sutil should have given Perez enough room when Perez was looking to pass him for position on the track. You could say that Sutil didn’t see him. But from looking at the footage, I believe that Sutil did see Perez and just didn’t give him enough room. But as he says, luckily the car wasn’t damaged and he could continue racing until his retirement later on in the race.
But overall, it has been a disappointing weekend for Sauber and Sutil once again. They simply just aren’t competitive enough and they show little signs of improvements on the track but not enough to get in a position to challenge for points. And it is a shame as I have a soft spot in my heart for Sauber and I would love to see them back challenging for points where they belong.
But I feel that Sauber are just not in a position to fight for points this season and will now have to ensure that their 2015 car learns their lessons from this season and come back into the new season back where they belong in Formula One’s midfield.
