Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat says he hopes he can give his home crowd something to cheer about this year after a disappointing inaugural race on home turf.

Despite qualifying fifth for Toro Rosso in 2014, the Russian’s race did not go to plan and eventually finished 14th, a lap down.

Kvyat was promoted to senior team Red Bull at the end of 2014 and has performed solidly throughout. He scored his maiden podium in Hungary and has been a match for teammate Ricciardo since Monaco.

The Russian described last year’s event for him as ‘crap’ due to a race which was hampered by fuel problems.

“[Last year] qualifying was great but the race was just… how can I say this… well, it was cr*p. We had problems with fuel consumption during the race and it was just a really disappointing day. I’m hoping we will be able to give the fans there something more to cheer about this year.

Kvyat admits the attention he gets in Russia is a positive thing and it spurs you on to do better.

“Sometimes you do get some strong attention but that’s part of the game and what you have to take from it is that the attention comes from the fact that perhaps you have been doing something good, which is a positive. You have to understand that the fans are coming out to support you and that is something quite special – I’m happy to have the attention, it gives you a bit of a lift.”
