Alain Prost: “lots of things need to change”

Four-time Formula One World Champion Alain Prost believes wholesale changes need to be made to improve Formula One.

What can be done to improve the sport is always a hot topic, with audiences falling, tracks struggling to fund races and teams struggling to stay afloat the FIA have asked FIA President Jean Todt and Bernie Ecclestone to find solutions.

Alain Prost has often been very vocal in what he believes needs to happen to improve F1 but this time, he has kept his cards close to his chest, believing the constant criticism facing F1 is not helping resolve the issues, instead it is taking focus away from the big picture causing everyone to focus on certain aspects. In an interview with Motorsport.com he suggested a complete rethink on the sports rules and regulations needs to be looked at.

“I don’t want to enter too much into this perspective and I’ll tell you why: people only talk about one thing and that is the problem with F1”.

“People look at the engine, the chassis and then the sporting regulations. But, in my opinion, we need to have a complete package and that is going to take a long time.

“So I don’t want to see things going out in the press, as I can see sometimes quotes that don’t reflect what I think. There are a lot of things that you need to change altogether.”

What Alain Prost is saying makes perfect sense, changing one or two little things each year has not worked in improving Formula One, if anything it has damaged its appeal more.

“It is not only the engine, or the chassis. It is revenues, it is sporting regulations, it is everything all together.

“You need to give the possibility to small teams to be more competitive, not only by adding more money but by finding different ways in the regulations, [especially] the technical regulations.”

Whilst it’s easy to understand the position the FIA and Formula One management are in, if they di not make some drastic changes in the foreseeable future Formula E could become the new powerhouse of motorsport with their following consistently increasing.
