Renault not targeting F1 title in 2016

Former four-time Formula One world champion and Renault ambassador Alain Prost has said winning a constructors’ title is not Renault’s main concern.

Renault will take part in the 2016 Formula One season as a works team after a six-year absence in which time they helped Red Bull to four drivers’ and constructors’ world championships.

With their impressive race history both as a works team and a supplier, you would expect Renault to have their targets set on winning a world title as soon as a possible but Alain Prost believes the team is more focused on their nine-year plan.

Speaking to Auto Motor Und Sport, Alain said: “Winning the world championship is not necessary for Renault.”

“We understand that Renault’s nine-year plan consists of building the team up to be consistent challengers for outright race wins and to show the world that Renault is a top team like Mercedes and Ferrari.”

“But we must at some point be able to ride at the head of the World Cup. So that people around the world feel: Renault is a top team. For Mercedes or Audi, it is much more important to win. You only have one claim. For us the world title is an addition.”
