Hamilton fastest again in second Melbourne practice

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time once again in second practice for the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.

Hamilton made the most of the tricky conditions to set the fastest time of second practice in Melbourne on the intermediate tyres.

Like in FP1, the session was was disrupted by intermittent showers meaning drivers were not able to complete any laps on the slicks.

The majority of the field completed a handful of laps each on the intermediate tyres as they tip-toed around the slippy Albert Park circuit.

Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg spun into the barrier at the exit of turn six which resulted in front wing damage forcing the German to stop out on the circuit. Rosberg was unable to get back out again in FP2.

Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg was Hamilton’s nearest challenger in FP2 – The German ended the session just 0.467s off Hamilton’s time.

Kimi Raikkonen was three-tenths further back in third place. The Finn completed just seven laps in total.

Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and Fernando Alonso all ended second practice within a second of Hamilton’s benchmark.

McLaren completed the highest amount of mileage with Alonso completing 16 laps and Button circulating 13 times. The 2009 F1 champion was seventh fastest in the MP4-31.

Sebastian Vettel, Sergio Perez, and Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top 10 positions.

After spending the entire session in the garage, both Williams driver took to the circuit with just seven minutes of the session remaining. Both Bottas and Massa completed pit-stop practice and did not complete a flying lap in the FW38.
