Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen are looking forward to the Spanish Grand Prix, a track where the team historically do well, having claimed wins and podiums at the track in the past.

Ricciardo is the driver who got the team’s last podium at the circuit in 2014, and he is hoping to be close to the front after a Russian Grand Prix which saw him fail to finish a race in the points for the first time in 2016.

“Barcelona marks the start of the summer, the weather is starting to get better and we usually go pretty well at the Circuit de Catalunya so I’m looking forward to it,” Ricciardo said.

“I know the track quite well as we spend quite a lot of time there but there’s always things to learn from the track though so I don’t want to say I know it all, but having had a few races in the car it’s about putting it all together and having a strong weekend.

“It’s a relatively high downforce circuit so we can strap most of the things on the car that make it go faster. It’s quite hard on tyres so we are normally a bit stronger than other teams in that area. It could provide a good opportunity for us to get close to the podium.”

On the other side of the garage, all eyes will be on Verstappen who makes his debut for the team. He is the first Red Bull-backed driver to change teams during a Formula One season since Jaime Alguersuari was drafted into Toro Rosso for the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix to replace Sebastien Bourdais.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing and I can’t wait to jump in the car in Barcelona,” Verstappen said.

“I have a lot of work to do ahead of the race, lots of data to study but luckily it’s a track I know well because we have driven there so much.”
