Jolyon Palmer has slammed Formula One stewards’ decision to introduce a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to track limits at Silverstone.

The 2014 GP2 Series champion has described them as ‘a mess’ and is concerned that Sunday’s race will be dominated by unfair penalties for track extending.

During Friday’s driver briefing, all F1 drivers were warned by stewards that they were not allowed to run all four wheels off the track at Copse, Stowe and the exit of Club.

Palmer was one of a handful of drivers who had a lap deleted by the stewards in qualifying for extending track limits at Copse corner.

“It will be the same mess in the race,’ said Palmer.

“How do you deem what is a necessary penalty? The whole thing is really not good for anyone.

“It is rubbish. For us drivers we want to push to the maximum, but it is just stupid when some people can go with four wheels off the track and get away with it and others can’t.

“It is also rubbish for the fans because Hamilton is on pole but then the next minute he has had his time deleted. It is a real problem because it makes it more confusing for fans and less enjoyable, too.”

Palmer will start his first home race at Silverstone from 18th place.
