Speaking at Thursday’s driver’s press conference, ahead of the US Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton said he would ‘take it like a man’ if teammate Nico Rosberg was to win the world championship this season.

With four races to go and a 33-point gap to Rosberg, the permutations now lie outside of the Briton’s control.

Hamilton has not once lost a title to Nico Rosberg in their time of racing together on track, from karting until Formula One. Therefore, if Rosberg was to become champion, it would be the first time Lewis would have to cope with losing to his longtime childhood friend and rival.

“You can’t win them all,” he replied when asked about the title fight. “Look at the great champions who lost titles. It’s part of the game.

“I’m going to give it everything I’ve got and everything is possible.”

It’s certainly been a tough season for the three-time world champion, suffering reliability issues through no fault of his own, but he has been consistently finishing well when things have been going well.

Such comments from Hamilton really show his maturity with the current situation despite the battles with the media throughout the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

Many might argue that Rosberg has not had to fight too hard due to the unreliability on Hamilton’s side of the garage, but it appears that the Brit has somewhat acknowledged that he has been given a true challenge this season.

“We have always had close battles. If all things were equal, there would be a certain result,” he added.

“This year has been a little different in terms of how our performances have been mechanically and there is nothing I can do about that.

“When the car has been good, I have often done the job with it and there has been a few, especially in the first few seconds of the race, when I have not done that well. But that’s motor racing.”
