Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Brad Binder has undergone successful surgery on a broken left arm in Barcelona. The South African rider sustained the injury in a crash during testing in Valencia on Monday.

The 2016 Moto3 World Champion will make the step up to the Moto2 World Championship next season with Ajo Motorsport on the new KTM chassis alongside Miguel Oliveira. Binder spent two days on the bike at Jerez last week, and found himself growing in confidence on it as the test drew to a close.

Hoping to carry on in this manner this week in Valencia, Binder unfortunately high-sided at Turn 9 and the bike landed on his arm. The South African suffered a ‘fracture-dislocation of the left forearm.’ He was operated on by renowned MotoGP surgeon Dr. Xavier Mir and his team and has been given a recovery time of at least a month.

“Brad Binder suffered a fracture-dislocation of the left forearm known as a ‘Galeazzi Fracture,’ which consists of a fracture of the radius and a dislocation of the ulna at the wrist,” explained Dr. Mir.

“In this case the radius was very displaces so we had to put it back in place, fixing it with a plate and seven screws. This movement caused the ulna to put itself in place. He has a small lesion of the interosseous membrane and this, without causing any problem, will delay somewhat the recovery of the rotation of his arm by about three weeks. In principle, we believe that in four or five weeks it will be cured.”

Binder was forced to miss the final day of testing as a result of the crash, but luckily the next time the Moto2 paddock will be back in action will be in early March for the resumption of pre-season testing at Jerez.

The South African wasn’t the only rider forced to call time on their testing programme early. Gresini Racing’s Jorge Navarro suffered a dislocated shoulder on Monday at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit and will have surgery on December 1 to rectify the problem.
