Felipe Massa enters his final Grand Prix weekend at in Abu Dhabi this weekend and his former team Ferrari have wished him farewell in a statement released by the team.

Massa was nearly crowned champion in 2008, he took his defeat in the most gracious manner, holding back the tears with all his might in front of his adoring home crowd.

The statement read: ”The whole of Ferrari sends its greetings to Felipe Massa on his last competitive weekend of Formula 1. Felipe has been connected to the Scuderia for over 10 years including eight as a race driver featuring 11 wins, 15 pole positions, 36 podiums and very nearly the world title in 2008.

”His competitive qualities and great passion have made him one of the Scuderia drivers most loved by fans around the world.”

After his horrendous accident at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix during qualifying, it looked like his career could have been over, but with help from the Ferrari team and doctors through the rest of the year, Massa was able to return to the cockpit for the 2010 season.

The statement concluded: “We send a big thanks to you Felipe for these wonderful years together, for the generosity that has always marked you on track and off, and for how you have successfully combined humanity and professionalism in a complex environment such as Formula One.

“Obrigado Felipe, good luck for your future projects and a big hug to you and your wonderful family from all of us at Ferrari.”
