Former Sauber and Haas Formula One driver Esteban Gutierrez will race in Formula E at some point in the 2016-17 season, the series has confirmed.

Gutierrez will take part in his home round in Mexico City on April 1, the fourth event of the season, alongside other unconfirmed entries as he ponders joining the series for the fourth season in 2017-18.

It will be his second time racing at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in his career, having finished 19th on the F1 configuration in October last year.

The 25-year old was left looking for another drive in motorsport after losing his F1 seat at Haas to Kevin Magnussen ahead of the 2017 season.

The last four seasons of his career have focused solely on F1, making 59 race starts with the Swiss and American teams and spending the 2015 season as a reserve driver at Ferrari. He has not raced in any other series since taking part in the 2012 GP2 season, when he finished third in the championship.

When he does take to a FE track for the first time, he will become the 19th ex-F1 race driver to compete in the electric series as it becomes a popular destination for those seeking a drive.

He would be the eighth former F1 driver on the current grid, joining Sebastien Buemi, Jerome d’Ambrosio, Lucas di Grassi, Nick Heidfeld, Nelson Piquet Jr., Stephane Sarrazin and Jean-Eric Vergne.
