A two-day wet weather tyre test will take place ahead of the 2017 season, it has been decided at an F1 Commission meeting in Geneva.
Pirelli have been pushing for the test to take place as they focus on developing their wet weather tyres following complaints from drivers.
The blue-striped tyres came under scrutiny following the Brazilian GP last November, which was repeatedly interrupted due to heavy rain.
It is understood that Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes will each provide one “mule” car for the two-day test, though the location and date are currently undecided.
“The only area where we will be working during this season is with the wet tyres, and we are trying to improve the warm up time – especially in relation to the standing starts,” Pirelli boss Paul Hembery told Autosport.
The FIA World Motor Sport Council are also considering a proposal that would see wet weather races resume from a standing start if they originally begin behind the safety car. If the plans go ahead, the full wet compound will become all-the-more important, making Pirelli even more keen for the testing to go ahead.
As well as the pre-season testing, there will be 25 days of in-season tyre testing, and a short, one to two-day, post-season test has also been suggested.
