Reigning rookie champion Joel Eriksson will continue in the European Formula 3 championship with Team Motorpark.

As well as his rookie championship success, Eriksson took 10 overall podiums, including a win, and finished fifth in the championship. The teenager far outscored his teammates, his closest teammate five places behind him in the championship.

The success in his debut year prompted him to remain at the team he’s raced with all his single seater career, in the hopes of building on the foundations he made last year.

“I learned so much last season, enjoyed the format, and managed to achieve my target of winning the rookie title,” said Eriksson. “It was a good first year and, based on the results we achieved and the pace we had, I’ll be heading into 2017 with the aim of winning the championship.”

Eriksson doesn’t expect that to come easily, with the drivers already announced expected to put up a strong challenge, but the Swedish driver is up for the challenge.

Motorpark also believe they are in with a chance at winning the championship with Eriksson.

“After enjoying an extremely successful 2016 season with Joel, winning the rookie title, we are confident that we will be strong contenders for the overall championship in 2017,” said team principal Timo Rumpfkeil.

“We took huge steps last year and have continued to work extensively over the winter preparing ourselves carefully in testing. We’re looking forward to an exciting season, and we are ready to take the fight.”

Eriksson is the first driver Motorpark has confirmed for the upcoming season. Two of his 2016 teammates have already taken the step up to GP2 and GP3, whilst his third will remain in F3 but has switched teams.
