Formula 1 could be heading to New York, Las Vegas or other famous locations if plans to expand the sport’s US presence go ahead.

There is currently only one grand prix in the US, at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas, but new F1 boss Chase Carey wants to change that and make the sport bigger in his home country.

The new F1 owners are looking at a number of possible future locations for a race with New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Las Vagas on Carey’s list.

“We’re engaged in a number of markets that we think have the potential for a race,” he told Sky Sports. “We’d like to have a race that really is a major event in the US, at a destination city… a city where people would want to go for three days, four days, or a week, and have this race be the centre piece of this event, like a SuperBowl is.”

As well as new tracks in the US, Carey wants to make GPs more of an event, both in America and in Europe.

He sees rounds in Western Europe important to F1’s past and future.

“We do want to grow globally, particularly in some of the markets where there are opportunities, but the foundation of the sport is western Europe and we want to make the races in western Europe as strong as they can be.”

With circuits in Western Europe losing money with every GP, Carey believes making F1 races bigger and better could keep rounds like the British and German GP alive.

“We think every one of these races that we have an opportunity to make them bigger, broader, more exciting and more successful.

“We are excited about the opportunity to continue to build the sport at the track across western Europe and in Britain.”
