Former Ferrari driver and four-time world champion Alain Prost believes that the Scuderia needs to remain calm if they wish to achieve future success.

Heading into the 2016 season, the team was building itself up for a year of challenging Mercedes for race wins and battling hard for the world title.

Yet, the SF16-H provided no victories, 10 podiums and finished third in the Constructors’ championship behind Red Bull, despite constant claims that new developments were being made to produce a winning car.

Prost was quoted by F1i.com as telling Italian newspaper La Repubblica: “What Bernie said was harsh.

“I was there for two years: one was beautiful, the other terrible. What I can say is that winning in such a competitive environment as F1 requires more linear behaviour, with less mood swings”.

Prost joined the Scuderia in 1990 after his tenure at McLaren came under severe strain after an extremely intense battle with Ayrton Senna.

The two-year experience with Ferrari proved how volatile the atmosphere can be in Maranello, his words of wisdom come from his time at the team which saw him leave with one race left of the 1991 season after heavily criticising the car.

The four-time champion added: “Words should be used more carefully. It is clear that if you promise to win the championship, then it becomes difficult to remain calm when things go wrong.”
