Former chief race engineer and acting team principal Gerry Hughes has been named as the new team principal for NextEV.

Hughes succeeds Dr. Martin Leach, the former team principal, who passed away at the beginning of November. He previously filled the position during the second race of the 2016/17 season at the Marrakech ePrix later in the same month.

The promotion also sees him take up the role of head of performance programme for NIO’s supercar programme.

Hughes said that he is delighted to be leading the team going forward and is expecting results from both roles in future times.

“Taking on the role of project lead for both the Formula E team and EP9 supercar programmes will include new challenges for me, but they are challenges that my team and I relish,” he said.

“I must thank everyone at NIO for their support and confidence in me during this transitional period. I am extremely honoured that William Li and Lihong Qin have given me this opportunity and I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that both programmes are a success going forwards.”

The engineer has been involved in Formula E for the last three seasons, starting as head of track operations, chief engineer and technical director at Aguri between September 2014 and December 2015.

He then moved to his current team as chief performance engineer before becoming chief race engineer in April 2016 and covering his new position.

Hughes has held many positions in motorsport during the last 18 years, beginning as a race engineer at Williams in the British Touring Car Championship before entering Formula 1 in roles at Jaguar, Jordan, Red Bull and Super Aguri.

Other roles have included working with Status Grand Prix as a technical director in 2008 and as engineering head of track liaison and F1 track support manager at Cosworth between 2009 and 2012.
