BP’s Castrol brand has taken on the challenge of working with McLaren-Honda as the oil and fuel supplier makes its return to Formula One.

McLaren split with long-term partners Exxon/Mobil at the end of last season after more than 20 years together. As well as the morale hit of losing the oil suppliers to competitor Red Bull, Honda had built their engine in close collaboration with Mobil, presenting another challenge for McLaren to overcome moving forwards.

BP/Castrol was the main contender to replace Mobil and McLaren today confirmed the company will supply fuel and lubricants to them this season, as well as to their Automotive branch.

“This agreement between McLaren, BP and Castrol is between brands who both share a long-standing and well-recognised passion for innovation in all we do,” said McLaren technology group CEO Jonathan Neale.

But McLaren won’t be BP’s only priority, as the fuel supplier has already announced that it will be working with Renault’s works team this season.

There are currently four oil and fuel suppliers working in Formula One. As well as BP and Mobil there is Mercedes’ supplier Petronas and Ferrari’s supplier Shell.
