ADAC Formula 4 champion Joey Mawson will continue with Van Amersfoort Racing as he makes the step up to the European Formula 3 championship this season.

The Australian dominated the F4 championship last season, taking nine wins and 16 podiums from the 24 races. After two years racing in the German championship, Mawson believes now is the right time to take the next step in his career, and that Van Amersfoort is the best place for him to be.

“Following the strong relationship we have built up, I am glad to be taking the next step together with Van Amersfoort Racing,” he said. “I know everybody in the team, they know me, so that will definitely help to speed up the learning process in my first season in Formula 3. I am well aware of the task that I am facing, but I am eager to learn and acquire more experience.”

Mawson has success in multiple championships. As well as taking the F4 title last season, the teenager competed in the British F3 Autumn Trophy last year, finishing second in the standing. He also raced in the new MRF Challenge Formula, again finishing second in the standings with three race wins to his name.

With that success, team principal Frits van Amersfoort expects him to do well in F3.

“In the past two seasons, and especially with his title-winning campaign last year, Joey has clearly demonstrated his abilities and I am convinced that, given the right support, he has what it takes to do well in F3,” he said.
Mawson joins the already confirmed Pedro Piquet at the team. Piquet raced with van Amersfoort in the championship last season.
