Italian rider Franco Morbidelli asserted his dominance in Qatar, as the Marc VDS rider eased to his first ever Moto2 win.

Morbidelli was able to turn his maiden pole position into a comprehensive victory. In a fashion similar to double Moto2 champion Johann Zarco, the Italian was able to get away from the leading pack, and have a race all on his own.

Behind Morbidelli was a tight battle for the podium places, with Tom Luthi, Takaaki Nakagami and Miguel Oliveria all vying for second and third. Oliveria, riding the new KTM chassis, was unlucky to miss out on third. The team will, however, take great confidence from the result. Luthi was second, whilst Nakagami was third.

Alex Marquez was able to keep pace with the leading group throughout the race. However, tyre degradation led to Morbidelli’s teammate dropping off and finishing fifth. Luca Marini was sixth, whilst Fabio Quartararo was seventh.

Lorenzo Baldasarri, Xavi Vierge and Axel Pons were the final riders inside the top ten, finishing eighth, ninth and tenth. The Kiefer racing team may be slightly disappointed with their weekend, especially after Danny Kent’s strong grid position. The Briton finished down in 13th, whilst Aegerter was 11th.

It was to be a disappointing day for rookies Jorge Navarro and Brad Binder also. Binder finished down in 20th, whilst Navarro crashed on his class debut.

Morbidelli will be looking to add to his victory tally in two weeks time, as the championship heads for the Argentina GP.
