Todt: F1 needs to change

Formula One is too expensive, too complicated, and too reliable. That’s the view Jean Todt holds as the FIA meets to decide the direction of F1 from 2021.

It’s clear the FIA president wants change, but what that change will be is still unknown. Organisers face the challenge of deciding just how far F1 will follow the development of motoring technology but Todt’s comments suggest F1 will take few steps towards limited energy.

F1 needs to keep up with the rest of the motoring world if it wants to continue to be the pinnacle of motorsport, but organisers risk alienating fans by moving to things like electric engines. Even switching to the V6 engines has upset many people.

As well as this, the research and development involved in creating new technology has seen costs rise and small teams struggle, a problem organisers are keen to solve.

“If you take me through a Formula One car, I think the cars are too sophisticated, probably too high-technology, which is not needed for the sport,” Todt said.

“It’s a very sensitive point because on one side motoring is evolving and it would be very difficult to say the pinnacle of motorsport is not following the evolution of motoring.”

However, Todt said F1 will continue to use a “conventional” engine rather than electric or fuel cell powered technology. In which ways F1 will follow the “evolution of motoring” is still unknown.
