Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld believes he could have kept up with the race leaders, if it hadn’t been for backmarkers.

The German finished third as part of Mahindra’s best ever race result, but fell away from Jose Maria Lopez and Sebastien Buemi in the later stages of the race. Heidfeld blames the battling backmarkers ahead of him on track.

“There were cars that were lapped and they cost me some time,” he told Read Motorsport. “This is why the two cars ahead of me were moving away. There was Sam Bird and another guy and, instead of letting me through, I think he tried to use the situation to try and overtake the car in front.

“I know they are also fighting, but I think it was not correct because I clearly lost time, but what can you do.”

Heidfeld didn’t go as far as to say he would have challenged Lopez for second, but he did have a good pace and more energy.

“The car wasn’t fantastic, but I’m happy and optimistic because the car was better than in Monaco,” he said. “In the second stint, I did similar pace to the guys ahead of me and I still had more energy left. It was a good day.”

Heidfeld leave Paris having jumped up to fourth in the championship, just 11 points behind Renault e.dams’ Nico Prost. Next up will be a double header at his home circuit in Berlin.
