Sebastien Buemi is not putting himself under extra pressure to build up a gap before the New York ePrix.
Buemi is expected to miss both races in the double header due to World Endurance Championship commitments. His absence would be the perfect chance for championship rival Lucas Di Grassi to close in on Buemi, with 58 points on offer over the course of the weekend.
“I think if you really want a decent chance, then you need to build up a gap,” Buemi told Read Motorsport. “And, with Lucas’ results, it’s difficult to build a gap.
“I’m focusing race by race and if I have a gap then I have it. It’s great. If not, that’s it. I don’t put myself under extra pressure.”
After the disappointing result in Mexico, where Buemi took only a single point, the Renault e.dams driver isn’t certain he’ll be able to build up a big enough buffer to Di Grassi.

At the moment, that gap stands at 43 points. Buemi has dominated so far this season, Mexico results aside. The mistakes that were common in season two haven’t been seen from the Swiss man this year. Buemi believes he’s gotten better at handling the pressure.
“I’ve done my best,” he said. “I’m getting more experienced in this category and the way of driving the car, so clearly that’s helping. I’m trying to learn from my mistakes like everyone but, so far, this year it’s been quite good.”
He said that winning the championship last year boosted his confidence.
“You know that you’ve done it once, and everything that comes after that is going to be a bonus. But when you’re in such a position, you want to win again.”
Buemi also mentioned in the post race press conference that he may try an overnight dash to attend the Saturday New York ePrix before the 6 hours of Nurburgring, but said that may be too complicated.
