Joint championship leader Joel Eriksson topped the times during free practice ahead of the fourth round of the European Formula 3 championship.
Eriksson was the only driver to set a time quicker than 1m35s on the wet Hungaroring track, jumping to the top in the final 15 minutes of practice.
Callum Ilott was second fastest, just two tenths of a second slower than Eriksson. The Prema Powerteam driver was second early in the session, but knocked back down the order as others improved. He found time in the closing minutes to jump back up the order, taking second ahead of team mate Guan Yu Zhou.
Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala was fastest in the first 40 minute session, and quickly beat that time at the beginning of the second practice. But he dropped down the order as other drivers found time, and finished the second session fourth fastest overall.
The other joint championship leader, Lando Norris, could only manage fifth fastest. In the final 15 minutes, he jumped to the top of the order, but a flurry of fast laps from others meant he wouldn’t stay there for long.
Joey Mawson took sixth fastest, ahead of Maximillian Gunther.
David Beckmann, who is driving for Motopark after leaving Van Amersfoort Racing, took eighth fastest.
Mick Schumacher and Ferdinand Habsburg rounded off the top 10.
