Maximilian Gunther will start the first race at the Hungaroring from pole after topping qualifying one.
He was just three tenths of a second faster than Joey Mawson, who will start race one from second.
The joint championship leaders had a difficult session. Joel Eriksson, who topped the times in practice, could only manage 17th fastest, faster only than Keyvan Andres. Lando Norris faired a little better, taking seventh fastest with a time nearly a second slower than Gunther.
Hitech GP’s Jake Hughes took third fastest, ahead of Jehan Daruvala, who jumped up to fourth with his final lap of the session.
Callum Ilott and Pedro Piquet are set to make up the third row of the grid with a fifth and sixth place in qualifying.
Guanyu Zhou finished the session eighth fastest, with Harrison Newey and Mick Schumacher completing the top 10.
