Jake Hughes topped a close qualifying session to take his first pole position of the 2017 European Formula 3 season.

Hughes’ time, set on his final lap of the session, was just seven tenths of a second faster than the slowest driver on the grid, and two thousandths of a second faster than Lando Norris in second.

After topping free practice this morning, Pedro Piquet was the early leader but dropped down the order as others improved. Half way through the session, he’d dropped to 17th, but soon jumped back up the order to first. He, Norris, and Jehan Daruvala, spent the rest of the session swapping positions at the top of the order before Hughes jumped up to snatch pole with a time of 48.231s.

Norris secured second, only a hundreth of a second faster than Piquet.

Prema Powerteam duo Maximilian Gunther and Callum Ilott secured fourth and fifth. The pair spent most of the session at the sharp end of the field, but were never quite fast enough to top the times.

Ferdinand Habsburg finished the session sixth fastest, ahead of Guanyu Zhou and Joey Maweson. After his early pace, Daruvala dropped down to ninth by the end of the session. Harrison Newey rounded off the top 10.

Championship leader Joel Eriksson is set to start the first race of the weekend from the back of the grid. He set the 17th fastest time, 0.871s slower than Hughes.
