Pedro Piquet was fastest in practice on a wet and drying track at the Norisring. The Van Amersfoort driver topped both free practice sessions before qualifying this afternoon, ahead of Callum Ilott and Maximilian Gunther.
Piquet and team-mate Joey Maweson set the bar early in the first session before rain disrupted running. The session was declared wet and Piquet’s time of 49.357s remained unchallenged until the second session.
After the heavy rain cleared and the track started to dry, FP2 began. With slick tyres back on the car, it was Callum Ilott setting the early pace with a time eight tenths of a second better than Piquet’s FP1 effort. Piquet replied with a time three hundredths of a second faster than Ilott’s, ending the session with a 48.478s.
Gunther ended the session a tenth of a second behind his team-mate.
It was a close session. Ferdinand Habsburg’s fastest lap placed him fourth, the highest of the Carlin drivers. Guanyu Zhou’s time, just five hundredths of a second slower than Habsburg’s, was only enough for 10th.
The fastest rookie was Jehan Daruvala, who finished sixth overall but set a time identical to that of points leader Joel Eriksson. Eriksson was classified fifth, as he set the time first.
At the bottom of the top 10, Harrison Newey took eighth, ahead of championship contender Lando Norris and former Van Amersfoort driver David Beckmann. Maweson, who finished the first practice second, could only manage 15th overall.
