Mercedes has confirmed it will enter Formula E in the sport’s sixth season of competition, which begins in 2019.
The German manufacturer confirmed its DTM programme will be axed in favour of a Formula E venture.
Mercedes had been deliberating a possible entry into the all-electric series for a while but have now confirmed they will join DTM rivals BMW and Audi amongst others in committing to Formula E.
“In motorsport, like in every other area, we want to be the benchmark in the premium segment and to explore innovative new projects,” said Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.
“The combination of Formula 1 and Formula E delivers that.
“Formula E is like an exciting start-up venture: it offers a brand-new format, combining racing with a strong event character, in order to promote current and future technologies
“I am pleased that we were able to extend our entry option for one year to the 2019/20 season.
“This gives us time to properly understand the series and to prepare for our entry in the right way.”

At present, it’s unclear whether or not Mercedes will replace an existing team or if the size of the grid will increase to 11 cars for the 2019/20 season.
