Formula 2 and Formula 3 European Championship race-winner Prema is looking into a possible expansion into the GP3 Series for the 2018 season.
The Italian team has dominated junior motorsport in recent years, having a racer win the F3 title since 2012 and winning the GP2 drivers’ and teams’ championships in its maiden season in 2016.
Its array of competitors currently include 2016 GP3 champion Charles Leclerc leading the F2 championship, Ferrari junior Marcus Armstrong on top of the Italian F4 series, and Maximilian Guenther and Callum Ilott fighting for victories in F3.
Team manager Rene Rosin said to Autosport that the series is on its radar as it continues to monitor the single-seater ladder for opportunities.
“Starting from the position that we are fully committed to Formula 3, we are evaluating every possibility, and of course GP3 is one of them,” he said.
“A decision will be taken soon [likely within the next month], but nothing will take us out from our commitment to F3 for 2018 and onwards.”
A new team would begin the recovery of GP3’s grid after falling to just six teams and 19 drivers this year following Koiranen GP’s departure at the end of last season.
This sort of move could also preempt any changes in the third tier of the ladder in the future.
