Daniel Ricciardo topped the times in the first free practice session ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver set a time of 1m42.489s late in the 90 minute session, beating Ferrari’s Sebastien Vettel and team-mate Max Verstappen to the top spot.

It was Verstappen who was running fastest in the latter half of the session after Lewis Hamilton topped the times early on. He finished 0.121s slower than his team-mate and two hundredths of a seconds slower than Vettel.

After setting the pace early, Hamilton dropped to fourth fastest ahead of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.

It was a relatively clean session, albeit unrepresentative with temperatures expected to be much cooler for qualifying tomorrow afternoon.

Renault’s Jolyon Palmer ran into trouble when he “lost” the brake pedal midway through the session whilst team-mate Nico Hulkenberg was instructed to switch to a fail mode “urgently” by his engineers. Both drivers were able to continue their session, with Hulkenberg finishing 9th fastest and Palmer 12th.

A gearbox problem for Lance Stroll shortened his practice. He was 17th fastest after only 11 laps.

Kimi Raikkonen finished seventh, three tenths of a second faster than Fernando Alonso, who told his engineers he could have been P1 midway through the session.

Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top 10.
