Callum Ilott claimed pole positon for the first European Formula 3 race at of the Hockenheim weekend whilst Lando Norris outqualified title rival Maximilian Gunther.
Gunther was quickest early on, but dropped backwards as the session progressed. A wide moment on a late fast lap stopped Gunther improving, putting him 11th on the grid for tomorrow’s race.
Meanwhile, Norris is set to start on the front row of the grid having set a lap time a tenth of a second slower than Ilott. The pair swapped fastest laps in the closing stages of the session, but it was Ilott on top as the chequered flag fell, taking his ninth pole position of the season.
A late fast lap from Joel Eriksson allowed the Motopark driver to jump up the field to start tomorrow’s race third, alongside Jehan Daruvala.
Ferdinand Habsburg and Tadsuke Makino make up the third row of the grid, ahead of Pedro Piquet and Jake Hughes.
Nikita Mazepin and Guanyu Zhou round off the top 10.
Felipe Drugovich, who qualified 14th, was the fastest of the late arrivals to the grid whilst F4 rival Juri Vips was the slowest man with a time 1.6s slower than Ilott’s.
