Motopark has signed its first driver for the 2018 European Formula 3 season.
The German squad, which helped Joel Ericsson to vice-champion honours in 2017, is the first team to announce any of its ’18 line up.
Formula 4 race winner Fabio Scherer will make the step up to F3 with Motopark after strong performances in testing with the team.
“We have been following Fabio’s career very closely in F4 and he impressed us a lot this season,” said Motopark boss Timo Rumpfkeil.
“We tried to get him into our F4 team this year, but Fabio chose to go in another direction, which was fine.
“He has a huge amount of potential in motorsport and we’re very pleased that he’s chosen to join Motopark.”
Scherer took his maiden car racing victory in 2016, his rookie year in German F4. Racing with Jenzer Motorsport, the Swiss driver took one other points finish to finish 17th in the overall championship. He switched to US Racing for the 2017 season, when he claimed six podium finishes including a race win. He ended the season 5th in the championship.
“F3 is going to be a big progression in terms of the drivers I will face and needing to learn a new, faster car, but I am happy with that,” said Scherer.
“It’s an important step in my career – I have to make next year count and go for the best results I can.”
Schere’s F4 rivals Juri Vips and Felipe Drugovich made their F3 debuts in the final round of the season, Drugovich with Van Amersfoort and Vips with Motopark. Neither have confirmed their 2018 plans.
