Fenestraz preparing for “tough” year in European F3

Carlin’s latest European Formula 3 recruit Sacha Fenestraz is aiming to make it two titles in two years, though he admitted repeating the success of 2017 champion Lando Norris will be a challenge.

Fenestraz, one of three young drivers to join the Renault Sport Academy this year, took seven wins on his way to the Formula Renault Eurocup 2.0 title. In a one-off F3 appearance at the Nurburgring last year, he claimed a top 10 finish in the final race of the weekend and went on to finish seventh in Macau.

“I think 2018 doing FIA F3 will be a tough year,” he said.

“Nothing is impossible. I’ll have to work really hard to do it, though, as there is a really high level of drivers this year. Some really good second-year drivers and rookie year drivers.”

He added that he expected Carlin to be strong after the team ended Prema Powerteam’s F3 domination last year.

“[Carlin] has been really good last year and I think they’ll be good this year,” he said.

“I’ll try my best. I have good team-mates and we’ll work really hard together to try to do the best as possible. So why not be in the front rows starting this year? It would be awesome.”

The 2018 championship will begin in mid-May, giving Fenestraz time to test with the team and Renault in preparation for his first full season in F3, though he doesn’t expect any extra racing before the first race in Pau.
