Ferrari Backs Fred Vasseur Publicly to Silence Leadership Rumours

Ferrari has thrown its public support behind team principal Fred Vasseur, moving to end speculation about his future at Maranello. The Ferrari Fred Vasseur story built quickly this week, after a run of poor results increased scrutiny on the Frenchman heading into the final rounds of the season.

The pressure had been building since a difficult Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, when the team lost ground in the fight for second in the constructors’ championship. Our analysis of the chassis deficit in Baku covered how far off the pace the car looked that weekend, and the result reopened questions about Vasseur’s leadership.

Reports linking Red Bull boss Christian Horner with a possible switch to Ferrari added to the pressure. Ferrari answered on Tuesday, setting out its position in direct terms rather than letting the talk run unchecked.

Maria Conti Outlines Ferrari Position in Unscheduled Media Call

Ferrari Chief Communications Officer Maria Conti called an unscheduled media session on Tuesday to address the rumours head on. Crash.net reported that Ferrari publicly backed team principal Fred Vasseur throughout the call, with Conti opening by acknowledging how far the story had spread. “In the recent days, there has been increasing speculation surrounding Scuderia Ferrari HP, and particularly dedicated to its leadership,” she said.

Conti then closed down any doubt over Vasseur’s job.

“Ferrari’s position is clear, has not changed, and Ferrari has made its choices already, and we have full confidence in Fred Vasseur and in his team, and we continue to do so.”

Unity was her next theme. “At this time and in this particular moment, it’s really important that the team remains united and cohesive, and we are focused all the energy on the work ahead,” she said. Conti also addressed the wider interest surrounding Ferrari itself. “Ferrari has always attracted extraordinary interest, and it is only natural that many professionals aspire to be part of it,” she said. “It is a reflection of the strength of what Ferrari really represents.”

Conti made clear that the Horner story wasn’t the only trigger behind the speculation. She told reporters that talk about Vasseur’s position had been growing more widely for some time, well before The Times published Horner’s comments.

Pressure Mounts on Vasseur Following Baku Struggles and Horner Interest

Christian Horner has fuelled that speculation himself. The Red Bull principal told The Times that a return to Formula 1 with Ferrari would be ‘the dream’, remarks that landed just as the team’s on-track form dipped.

Vasseur addressed the talk directly in Baku on Saturday, and his answer left little doubt about his mood. “We are fighting for P2 in the championship, and at the end of the day, we are all speaking a lot about this, and even for the guys in the garage, to discuss about this, it’s the best discussion that we can have,” he said.

He was blunt about the constant questioning. “Each interview, 25 times a day, we are coming back to this,” Vasseur said. “But what can I do? Just try to do my best to push the team, to raise them to be motivated, focus on what is better today.”

On Horner specifically, Vasseur didn’t hold back. “Mr Horner is looking for a job – that, everybody knows – everywhere,” he said. “But it is what it is; it’s not in my hands.”

Former Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene issued a warning via Sky Italy, saying a move to Maranello could work against Horner given the scale of expectation that follows the Ferrari name.

Ferrari Focuses on Championship Fight Ahead of Upcoming Races

The Ferrari Fred Vasseur situation looks settled for now, at least in public, and the team’s attention has turned back to the track. Ferrari sit second in the constructors’ championship as the season moves into its closing rounds, and holding that position remains the stated priority.

Vasseur said the fight for P2 matters more than the noise around him, and Conti’s statement was designed to draw a line under the story before it affected the garage further. Our Baku race report showed how much ground Ferrari lost to its closest rivals that weekend, and closing that gap now matters more to the team than any speculation about its leadership.

Ferrari have made their position clear. Vasseur stays in charge, and the fight for second in the championship continues into the final rounds of the season.
